Barcelona-born artist Marta Knight announces her new Pau Riutort (FKA Twigs, Bad Gyal) produced EP, Unbothered, due May 9 via La Castanya, and shares the four-track album’s latest single, “Núvol.” Watch + share the lyric video via YouTube.
“Núvol” is a piece of flawless pop in which the layers are superimposed until bursting into a chorus full of class and elegance. The song, Marta’s first to intertwine Spanish and English lyrics, shows that particular talent she has for sounding timeless: transcending moments, fashions and labels.
Unbothered inaugurates Marta’s new stage, hinting that what is to come will be even more exciting and special, if that’s possible. The four tracks are about learning how to be a best friend to yourself, owning past mistakes and the difficulties of trying to figure out what’s best for you.
The title-track single – originally released last autumn – and “Good Intentions” make Snail Mail-ish indie rock meet Britpop-reminiscing guitar riffs, while “Killing Time” and “Núvol” take on a thoughtful perspective with self-analyzing lyrics influenced by SZA’s brutal honesty in “Ctrl.” These songs are the soundtrack of a healing process and trying to make times a little less strange.
Each small step taken by Marta has meant a giant leap in her career. Allergic to standing still or doing what is expected of her, the Barcelona-born singer has been consolidating her own style that sounds contemporary and classic at the same time, that is to say, timeless. The best pop, the one Marta practices, is like that: you play at capturing the references while always seeming different and special.
Since that initial Peterloo Heroes EP (2017) and her first hit, “Resurrection” (2018), which served to introduce her to the world, Marta Knight has specialized in pieces of high emotional depth and melodic aim, automatically distinguishing herself from other analog proposals. The album Strange Times Forever (2022) was her definitive confirmation as an artist with a long career and creative depth, an album where she added new textures to his sound palette and which allowed her to play in the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Portugal and Spain, supporting artists such as Men I Trust, Julien Baker and Owen.
Marta will tour across Spain this spring, with more plans for the broader world in the works. Stay tuned.
