Singer-songwriter Shea Fisher chatted about her new single “Take Me Back to Texas,” her music and songwriting inspirations, and being a part of the digital age.
How did “Take Me Back to Texas” come about?
I wrote this song while I was living in Nashville. At the time, I had traded my cowgirl boots for high heels, but I could always feel that part of me—the cowgirl roots—calling me back. I never quite felt at home in Nashville, like Texas was always tugging at me.
After a few trips back to Texas, I even met a guy who would later become my husband. So, in a way, this song is both a love song and a reflection of that pull to return to my Texas roots.
I co-wrote it with Grammy Award-winning Jessie Jo Dillon and Karyn Rochelle, who sings harmonies for Garth Brooks.
What inspires your music and songwriting?
A lot of it comes from personal experiences. Songwriting has always been a form of therapy for me.
I love turning my thoughts and feelings into lyrics that others can relate to, and it’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my songs resonate with people.
What’s it like to be the wife of world champion roper Tyson Durfey?
I grew up in a rodeo family—my dad was an Australian champion bull rider, and my mom is still a barrel racer. Rodeo is in my blood, and I was always destined to marry a cowboy.
It’s been an amazing experience being part of Tyson’s journey, especially when he won his first world title. We’re both very determined, motivated individuals, so we support and encourage each other’s dreams and goals.
How does it feel to be a part of the digital age?
It’s wild to think about how much the music industry has changed over the last decade—from album sales to streaming being the main way people hear music.
It’s a time that gives independent artists just as much of a chance as signed acts to get noticed, thanks to streaming and social media.
It’s an exciting and empowering era for artists. But when I first released music is was still albums in stores.
What do your plans for the future include?
After taking some time off from music, I knew that if I was going to return to the industry, I had to be all in. This year, I’ve got three singles and music videos planned for release.
My goal is to drop a full album by the end of the year. I also can’t wait to get back out on the road—performing is truly one of my favorite parts of being a singer.
What is your advice for young and aspiring singer-songwriters?
Be true to yourself. Don’t try to fit into someone else’s mold. Why be like anyone else when you can be the best version of yourself? And don’t let the fear of failure stop you from chasing your dreams. If you want it, go for it!
What does the word success mean to you?
For me, success is all about setting goals that challenge you and working hard to achieve them. It’s not just about the destination; it’s about the journey and the growth you experience along the way.
What would you like to say to our readers about “Take Me Back to Texas”?
This song is very close to my heart. It captures that feeling of longing we all experience when we miss home, and for me, that home is Texas.
I hope listeners connect with that feeling of yearning and find comfort in knowing it’s okay to miss the place that shapes who you are.
It’s a reminder that it’s okay to feel homesick, and sometimes, that’s exactly where we find the strength to move forward.
