Rock icon plays first show since band’s retirement from touring last year

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler returned to the stage for a special show Sunday less than a year after the band announced its retirement from touring.

Tyler made a rare live appearance during Aerosmith’s performance at the “Jam for Janie” event on Feb. 2.

The event raises money for Janie’s Fund, a nonprofit organization founded by Tyler that provides resources for young women who have experienced abuse.

“About last night,” the organization wrote in an Instagram post Monday. “We jammed for Janie, we jammed for the City of Angels and we jammed for the heroic firefighters that put their lives on the line for all of us.”

“Jam for Janie” also featured appearances from Chris Robinson, Mick Fleetwood, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Lainey Wilson, Tom Hamilton, Linda Perry, Matt Sorum, Jessie J and Nuno Bettencourt, Billboard reported.

Sunday’s performance was Aerosmith’s first live show in several months as well as Tyler’s second time appearing on stage since his vocal injury.

The singer fractured his larynx while performing in Elmont, New York on Sept. 9, 2023, Billboard reported. The incident forced Aerosmith to postpone shows on the farewell “Peace Out” tour. These shows were eventually canceled when the band announced its retirement from touring in August 2024.

Tyler’s last onstage appearance came in May 2024 when he performed “Mama Kin” with the Black Crowes in London.

It’s currently unclear whether Tyler will be returning to the stage again in the future.

Aerosmith’s bassist Tom Hamilton told WBUR in January that the band could have one-off appearances down the line.

“Steven’s healing process is going really, really well, but it goes at its own pace,” Hamilton told the station. “Maybe Aerosmith will do something in the future, but it’s a big if and the last thing I want to be doing is to try and push Steven in that direction.

“If we do anything in the future, it would come from him,” he added.

During the performance, Tyler joined Aerosmith for a six-song set that featured a rendition of the band’s “Toys in the Attic,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Dream On” and “Walk This Way.”

Aerosmith also did a cover of Extreme’s “More Than Words” and Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker,” Billboard reported.

“Let’s send a big #BlueArmy shout-out to our very own #Aerosmith crew who helped make JAM FOR JANIE such a massive success last night,” Aerosmith wrote on Instagram Monday.
