Iron Maiden (Palace of Auburn Hills - Detroit, MI) - 4/05/16

Iron Maiden landed Ed Force One in Detroit to rock the motor city once again.

Steve Harris, Bruce Dickenson, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith Niko McBrain and Janice Gers are showing no signs of age when it comes to concert performance. Saying they are energized on stage does not do the group justice. I’ve followed the band since the mid 1980’s and they are proving to be absolutely timeless. Bruce leaps around on stage and covers the entire floor area as he seemingly addresses every individual in the crowd. His vocals were powerful and clean. The band does not sit still for a moment. Constant movement and engagement with the audience. The entire band played as if they somehow still have something to prove after all of these years.

Every classic song they played was done with enthusiasm. Every song was played as if it were a new release. They played an even mix of classic favorites and some new releases that hold true to the Iron Maiden fan standards. Fans got much more than to be expected. I for one had honestly expected to see some deterioration between the age factor and also considering Bruce’s recent stint with cancer. I was completely wrong and once again blown away by the musicianship, vocals, stage presence, and theatrics. For me personally, the memories of this show will be as one of the best performances I have ever witnessed from any band.

The Book of Souls tour stage setting is of a Mayan theme which wouldn’t be complete without smoke stacks, pyrotechnics and of course Eddie making his appearance. I found the show to be mesmerizing as I reminisced of their Somewhere in Time tour (March 18,1987). I was lucky enough to make my way to the front barricade as a teen. The rush was no less, in fact the feelings were more intense as I had a job to perform and I wanted to nail this one as there is no band higher on my bucket list.

Opening Act, Raven Age, comes from a lineage of rock history as frontman George Harris is the son of Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris. You can definitely feel the bands 80s metal influence combined with the upbringing from legendary rockers.

The Book of Souls tour is world wideand you can find a show near you here:

It has been a true honor to cover such legends of heavy metal. I hope you treat your eyes and ears to a show!
