With a sea of lifted and customized trucks outside, this cold February night, the Palace Of Auburn Hills was host to none other than Eric Church, as he brought his “Holdin’ My Own Tour” to the state of Michigan.

Appropriately named, “Holdin’ My Own” because concert goers got Eric Church… and ONLY Eric Church as he played through an insane 39-song career spanning set. With no openers in site, the house lights dimmed slightly after eight o’clock, to a single spot light, shinning down on a microphone placed at center stage. Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” resonated throughout the building, ending with a standing ovation from the crowd.

Having no backdrop, a giant 4-sided digital screen hung above the three-hundred and sixty degree stage setup. There was no place that Eric Church couldn’t be seen by the capacity crowd.

As the music started for opener a “Mistress Named Music,” Eric and his six-piece band rose from beneath the stage on platforms that filled out spaces in the stage. Microphones laid out around the stage, allowed Eric to work the crowd from all angles often raising a drink, and cheering them on to get rowdier.

Fans young and old, could be seen singing along as Eric Church weaved in and out of hits like “Drink In My Hand’, “Talladega”, and “How ‘Bout You,” mixing in old fan favorites; he ended his first set with “Smoke A Little Smoke.”

Giving a generous intermission, to help break up the over three hour journey through his musical career, allowed everyone the chance to stretch, or make a run for the concourse, which was never really empty to begin with.

After twenty minutes, Eric eased back into set two, delighting the crowd with hits ”Guys Like Me,” “Homeboy,” and “Keep On,” once again mixing in old favorites, and even a cover of “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” by Bob Seger.

Selling out the Palace Of Auburn Hills is a difficult task, and is only more difficult when you have no backdrop and offer up a “Choir” section. People placed in “The Choir,” which when looking at a layout of the venue, were placed “behind” the stage were heavily interacted with as well, so no one felt left out.

The “Holdin’ My Own Tour” continues to roll on throughout June 24th, where Eric Church will headline Country Fest in Cadott, Wisconsin.
